The Merrick House at 907 Coral Way is one of Coral Gables's most cherished historic landmarks \u2014 the boyhood home of city founder George Merrick and the spiritual birthplace of 'The City Beautiful.'
Built in 1899 as a simple wood-frame house and later expanded into the coral-rock Mediterranean Revival home that stands today, the Merrick family home was where George Merrick — inspired by the Spanish architecture his mother loved — first dreamed up the planned city that would become Coral Gables.
Today, the Merrick House operates as a city-owned historic house museum, restored to its 1925 appearance and open to the public for tours. Original family furnishings, photographs, and personal effects bring the early 20th century city to life.
Coral Gables is one of the first planned cities in the United States, and the Merrick family's vision shaped every aspect — from the Venetian Pool to the Biltmore Hotel to the broad oak-canopied streets. Understanding Merrick House is understanding why Coral Gables looks and feels the way it does.
